| Brian Opyrchal | bRAVES740@MSN.COM | The regional issue for tennis is a heated argument. I believe that each regional should have only eight teams and the point total should be lowered to ten points to qualify for the state finals. I'm a part of the Avondale tennis team and I know that I will most likely never make state finals if the regional format stays like this. We are not able to compete against Stony Creek, North Farmington, Lahser, and Adams. If you don't change your policy I request that you change our region. I also agree with all the points on MHSTeCA. Less indoor courts, less time spent, only one day, and it would eliminate the confusing bye system for the state finals before. Most importantly though, it would give these smaller schools (like Avondale) the opportunity to go to state finals. It's not even worth going to our regional because we know by the second round that we will go up against Stoney Creek, North Farmington, Lahser, and Adams and that most of us will probably lose to them. |
| Peter Marabeas | marabeas@twmi.rr.com | I think this is a great idea. For a vast majority of the schools, it is not about winning the state championship, it is about participating in the tournament. The more schools you have participating, the greater the interest at the player level. The strong schools will remain strong and the average schools will improve. When a school qualifies for the state tournament, it sparks interest at the school, receives lots of local press, and increases participation. In general, participation in tennis has been declining over the past 20 years, this would help create growth and improve the sport at the high school level and beyond. |
| Jim Stewart | jimstew@trenton.k12.mi.us | At the risk of sonding like a prudish traditionalist, I'll offer a dissenting opinion to the others posted here. First, I'm not too sympathetic about loaded regionals. If a team con't finish 1st or 2nd at the region, they are unlikely to the win the state title |
| Keith Bernacki | keithbernacki@hotmail.com | Reducing regionals to eight teams does not necessarily prevent loaded regionals. What prevents the MHSAA from putting five out of the top 10 teams in one regional? The proposed rule would get more teams to the state tournament - good. However, it does not |
| Patti S. Morris | patricia.morris@avondale.k12.mi.us | I think limiting the size of Regionals to a maximum of eight teams and to change the number of points to 10 or more to qualify to the Final Tournament is a phenomenal idea! I agree with all of the reasons stated, especially having the players at one site, |
| Jeff Miner | jminer@bas.k12.mi.us | As far as Regionals go - I would love to see us seed the top 16 or so teams in each division andsplit them up. I know this idea would have many hurdles to clear, but it would also solve the stacked regionals issue. |
| Mike McGinnis | mcginnism4030@hotmail.com | Eight team regionals: I'm for it because of all the reasons given. Also an eight team regional makes a clean draw with no byes. |
| Lin Ware | thewarehouse@comcast.net | Great idea - we'd love to even entertain the idea of eever being able to get out our regional and unto states - we'd love to host! |
